Jonah, the Rebel
Chapter 1
You desire redemption in the land of ISIS?!?!?
To those barbarians?! Oh! This is a crisis!
Don’t You see what they’ve done? Just why should I go there?
They have shown no mercy! ISIS?? You should not spare!
I will not fly eastward; to the west I will sail!
Go to redeem ISIS? I’d rather meet a whale!
Ticket in hand, sailing across blue Pacific!
To Hawaii’s blessings! I’m feeling terrific!
Foreboding clouds rolled in. It had been so balmy.
Our cruise ship hit by a titanic tsunami!
On deck, all hell broke loose, I was in deep despair,
So, throw me overboard, I am beyond repair!
Chapter 2
Overwhelmed by this life and raging billowed waves,
I called out to my God, the only God who saves.
I seemed to be scooped up, in darkness I found breath,
Saved from certain drowning and saved from certain death.
Had I destroyed my life? Banished from Your presence?
Nay! Impossible, for divine omnipresence!
I was uncatchable, but you came and caught me.
Overboard I flew but undersea You caught me!
On the throne of my heart, just what really sits there?
A fool clings to idols, bringing ab/out despair.
I had missed out on grace, God’s greatest gift to give.
With joy, thanksgiving’s song, You’ll teach me how to live.
Chapter 3
Beached, like a whale on shore, amidst vomit and sand,
A second chance was born, my job had not been canned.
Off to the capital city of Damascus,
“Take the word of the Lord; speak it to the masses.”
I thought I would be killed; these men were treacherous.
“Forty days til wrath comes.” These words were dangerous.
But the people heard God! Their sin they lamented!
Mercy! God’s grace they found after they repented.
Chapter 4
Shouldn’t this saga end as a feel-good story?
Why am I so angry with Your divine glory?
These men don’t deserve grace! That is why I fled west!
Knowing Your compassion, mercy is what I guessed.
I just don’t give a rip! This life is just not fair!
Miserable! And pouty! In a funk! I don’t care!
Off to a hotel room; perhaps you’ll change Your mind.
“Seth, your anger is wrong. It’s Me you have maligned.”
At least a posh hotel, in comfort I could stew.
But the a/c went out! (bleep) Then I came unglued!
“Do you have a proud right to be mad about heat?”
“I most certainly do! It’s my need You won’t meet!”
“It was I who knocked out the air-conditioning.”
“What?!?! I’ve had it! I’m steamed! I’m done with witnessing!”
“Your comfort concerns you more than people you know.
But to all these rebels, my mercy I will show!”
