Practicing the Presence

Many of you have probably at least heard of “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence.  Brother Lawrence was a Carmelite monk who lived in the early 1600’s.  He spent 30 years as a kitchen helper and cook for his order, but became widely known, even by his local cardinal, for the special wisdom he possessed in regard to his ability and fervor for opening an intimate dialogue with God that would last throughout his entire day.  I wanted to share with you a couple of key steps from his book that I hope will be a blessing.

  1. Begin each day conscious of God: Begin your day with a Psalm, hymn, or spiritual song…there is power in worship!
  2. Read God’s Word: Ask God to teach you from your time in His word.  Find depth in applying his word in your life daily.
  3. Pray (without ceasing): This is easier than you might thing.  Going to God throughout they day will bring you peace.
  4. Be Thankful: Thank the Lord in every situation.  You don’t need to thank Him for trials, but for the strength to endure them.
  5. Be quiet in God’s presence: God will fill us with strength, calm, even wisdom if we slow down long enough for Him to pour into us.
  6. End the day in God’s presence: Thank Him for his leading, His faithfulness, and His blessings.

At first, these may seem simplistic…almost trite.  Until you try them.  Then, suddenly, there He is!  It is not difficult, but it does take some discipline.  “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Prov 3:5-6

Blessings,
